Students as Digital Civic Engagers – an Introduction

We’d like to introduce you to one of our newer projects, Students as Digital Civic Engagers (Student DCE). The aim of the project is to increase the digital skills and civic engagement knowledge of HEI managers and academic staff in order to empower students to become confident civic engagers through the use of digital technologies.

Some examples of students as civic engagers would be volunteering, being part of a society or a team, or being part of the student union. We know students can be very powerful and can inspire others through their words and actions.

Encouraging Students as Digital Civic Engagers will empower the students and boost their self-esteem. During Covid it’s more important than ever for students to be confident using digital technology. So much of our lives are now online, not just learning and using online platforms but also communicating with peers. We, along with our project partners, aim to work closely with HEI educators, lecturers and students on this interesting project.

There are four main outputs of the Students as Digital Civic Engagers Project:

  1. Guide to Civic Engagement is a comprehensive publication which explains the relevance of Digital Civic Engagement, how it relates to both pillars of teaching and academic outcomes, and how it can be taught effectively in Higher Education.
  2. Digital Civic Engagement Toolkit will provide practical guidance and tools for HEI educators and lecturers, who want to incorporate Digital Civic Engagement activities into their curricula/teaching strategies, with a particular focus on increasing their confidence in using digital tools.
  3. Digital Civic Engagement Syllabus and OERs will include a syllabus, learning objectives, lesson plans, assessment guides, and access to a variety of original teaching content and pedagogies (experimental learning, problem-based learning, service learning).
  4. Digital Civic Engagement MOOC will provide students & staff with an additional space in which to develop their digital civic engagement skills in a user-friendly format, as well as to explore follow on projects with their peers.
