Introducing the AIMS (Artificial Intelligence for Medical Students) Project

On 15 and 16 January, the Universidad de Alcalá hosted the meeting of partners of the European project AIMS (Artificial Intelligence for Medical Students), an initiative co-financed by the Erasmus+ Programme that aims to promote the integration of Artificial Intelligence in university and professional training in the field of medicine and health sciences. See our website here (https://aimsproject.eu/about/)

The consortium is made up of four partners related to this field (Hacettepe University in Turkey, Grigore T. Popa University in Romania, Warsaw Medical University in Poland and our own university, as coordinator), two partners for the dissemination and creation of educational content (Momentum in Ireland and EUEI in Denmark) and an expert partner in the medical device industry (MG Healthcare, also in Ireland).

During the two days of work, representatives of the partner institutions met to advance in the development of the project, share knowledge and coordinate the next phases of implementation. The meeting made it possible to strengthen collaboration between universities, experts in medical technology and specialists in curriculum design.

The general fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence were addressed, with special attention to generative AI and foundational models, as well as an overview of the European regulation applicable to AI in medicine. The journey of medical AI products from their development to their arrival on the market, before and after the European Health Data Space (EHDS), was also analysed, and different curricular models of the degrees in Medicine were reviewed.

Specific workshops were held on quality management and impact of the project, as well as on dissemination and communication strategy, including the use of social networks and other channels to maximize the visibility of the results.

One of the central axes of the meeting was the workshop on the Synergy Matrix, a strategic tool of the project that will map real use cases of AI in the field of health and align them with university curricula.

The second day included a specific workshop on use cases, in which preliminary examples of AI products and commercial applications in different medical areas were shared, feedback was collected among partners and necessary actions were identified to complete the matrix and ensure its real applicability in the educational field.

With this meeting, the consortium reinforces its commitment to offer universities, academic leaders and healthcare professionals clear and practical tools to adapt medical training to the challenges and opportunities posed by Artificial Intelligence in the health sector.
