AIMS Project Meeting Warsaw

Project Background:

“AIMS” is an Erasmus+ partnership helping medical education keep pace with modern healthcare. AIMS brings together universities, healthcare experts and digital learning specialists to build practical and ethical AI skills for future doctors. Through new Open Educational teaching tools and resources such as a Synergy Matrix, Competency Framework, Teaching Kit and an Interactive Digital Course, students and educators will explore how AI can support clinical learning, decision making and patient care.

Warsaw meeting 22nd and 23rd September:

Hosts and partner Warsaw Medical University were joined in person on the university campus by partners from Spain (University of Alcalá), Turkey (Hacettepe University Medical Faculty), Romania (Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine & Pharmacy) and Ireland (momentum) and online by Denmark (European E-learning Institute) and Ireland (MG Healthcare) for a series of very informative presentations on AI in medical education and patient care including:

Prof. Joanna Gotlib-Małkowska – Head, Department of Education and Research in Health Sciences, Medical University of Warsaw who introduced and chaired the meeting.

Prof. Piotr Regulski: Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Medical University of Warsaw who spoke about the current uses of AI in medical education.

Adrian Nowakowski: RN, PhD Candidate, Department of Education and Research in Health Sciences, Medical University of Warsaw who spoke about the challenges and opportunities of AI in Healthcare.

Jakub Kosma Rokicki, MD – spoke about AI in ECG acquisition and analysis and demonstrated PMcardio applied to a specific case: analysis of the tracing, the proposed diagnosis, and identification of the ECG features that support it.

Adrian Bednarek, MD – spoke about AI in clinical practice, research and medical education and how AI supports image acquisition, automated measurement and interpretation of an echocardiographic examination, illustrated with a patient case.

Following the presentations Prof. Mariusz Panczyk: Department of Education and Research in Health Sciences, Medical University of Warsaw moderated a lively Q & A discussion among all attendees on which competencies we need, which do we teach, and what must we change?

After lunch we were joined by Nazarii Kovalenko: Chair of the Student Research Society MedTechAI for a very lively and entertaining discussion on AI in medical education – what do students need right now?

At the end of the day Con & Leon from momentum presented project updates including the current position in terms of dissemination and what needs to be done next. Con presented a revised, single document solution for dissemination tracking which will make things a lot easier and more efficient for all partners.

Day Two

Included a fascinating visit to Warsaw Medical University’s new state of the art medical training simulation centre. The centre provides high-tech simulation environments for medical students, doctors, and healthcare professionals to practice clinical procedures, emergency care, and specialized treatments safely. It features realistic simulated hospital zones, emergency rooms, and specialized equipment designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical practice.

The highlight was the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (“CAVE”) room, a “one of it’s kind in the world” immersive medical training facility featuring immersive mixed-reality simulation space equipped with floor-to-ceiling, high-resolution large-format LED screens surrounding the room and combining digital projections of complex or stressful environments (such as accident scenes, roadside rescue, or chaotic emergency rooms) with high-fidelity physical medical manikins and real rescue equipment like defibrillators.

The two day meeting ended with a presentations from Mia Hamill: EUEI on the Use Case Index which is now live on the project website and Marçal Mora Cantallops: University of Alcalá, Spain on activities to date in the AIMS project and presentation of the next implementation stages.
