We are big fans of Sligo Global Kitchen, and we would like to congratulate them on their 10th anniversary. Ten years of making connections, breaking down barriers, promoting inclusion, and of course delicious food and wonderful events!
Sligo Global Kitchen’s vision and mission aim to bring together individuals from Direct Provision and the wider community through a shared appreciation for good food. Globe House, Sligo’s centre for Direct Provision, hosts over 200 people from up to 50 different nationalities. Without cooking facilities, families faced significant challenges. The Model Sligo played a key role in encouraging and supporting the creation of Sligo Global Kitchen to address these needs.
All members of Direct Provision were invited to take part, and the network has fostered a common space through the daily act of sharing meals. Residents of Globe House and local community members come together to exchange stories, recipes, and most importantly, a meal. This initiative has enhanced participants’ sense of self-worth and dignity. The network has also provided asylum seekers with opportunities to gain new skills and access training, with many individuals involved in the project going on to secure employment. Sligo Global Kitchen is a wonderful example of the work we are doing on the 3 Kitchens Project. Food is an important aspect of culture and identity. It can be a powerful starting point for migrant women to share their cultural heritage and build connections with their local communities. The 3 KITCHENS project is an adult education initiative to empower migrant women in three key areas: volunteering, employment, and entrepreneurship. It offers a nurturing space where they can connect with their culinary heritage, acquire new skills, and gain confidence.
