Future Cast hosted a wonderful event in Manorhamilton recently. The FEMCON (Empowering Women in Construction) Event took place on March 28th, in the W8 Centre. Future Cast is an Innovation, Education, and R&D centre focused on the Construction and Quarrying industries. They are also one of the partners for the FEMCON project. Lola is Momentum’s project manager for FEMCON, and she found the event very insightful.
The event panel were Claire Lundy, Dervla MacManus, Müge Karasahin, and Kevin Dolan. They discussed strategies around inclusion and diversity in construction, and the panel was moderated by Catriona Bergin (Chair of the steering group for Women in Construction and Quarrying Ireland).
“People resist change because it’s change, not because it’s hard” Kevin Dolan, talked about the measures taken by Vision-Built to promote gender diversity within the company.
Leonie Cornelius, Garden Designer, and Interior Architect, was the keynote speaker, and she spoke about gender inequality in certain industries, and how this has to change.
It was inspiring to hear so many different stories from women around the room about their own journeys into the industry. We look forward to seeing more women in the construction industry in the future.
FEMCON’s mission is to create innovative vocational education and training tools to help women working in or considering a career in the construction industry advance to visible roles within the industry. The project’s goal is to make the industry more appealing to women, resulting in a greater number of women choosing the sector, creating conditions for positive change, and improving the industry’s gender outlook and quality of life in the male-dominated sector.
