The Power of a Community Podcast, including hints and tips for starting one.

We are working on the COMM UNITY Radio Project. The overall objective of COMM UNITY is to empower community radio organisations and volunteers to become an influential pillar of adult education in civic engagement of diverse and vulnerable groups.

There has never been a better time to start a podcast, according to statistics in 2023 there were over 464 million podcast listeners worldwide, which was projected to reach 504.9 million by 2024.

If you aren’t sure where to start when it comes to podcasting, you can take the free online course on the COMM UNITY Radio website. Structured into six engaging modules, the programme covers everything from the basics of community broadcasting to advanced topics like funding and sustainability. Each module offers a set of digital badges – recognisable, electronic tokens of achievement that you can display on your resume or social media profiles. These badges are not just symbols; they represent your newly acquired skills and knowledge, making you a more attractive candidate in the job market or community initiatives. https://communityradioproject.eu/online-course/

Community Podcasts can feature all members of the community. Here are just some of the uses of a podcast:

– Highlight events that are taking place
– Capture the history of the town or village
– Record life stories of residents
– Feature local businesses
– Give all members of the community a voice
– Cover some of the local traditions or folklore

Starting a podcast doesn’t cost any money either, most phones have voice recorders, or you can download one.
Audacity is a free programme that can be used to edit the podcast.
Acast is a website that allows you to create and publish to every podcast app there is – including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music – and it’s free.

So, what are you waiting for? Why not start a podcast in your community. Let us know if you do, and good luck!
