Every year on 15 July, World Youth Skills Day reminds us that when young people have the opportunity to develop the right skills, they can become changemakers in their communities. Under the theme “Skills for a shared future”, this year’s World Youth Skills Day activities will spotlight the urgent need for innovative youth skills programmes—initiatives that empower young people not only to adapt, but to lead with empathy, bridge cultural divides, build resilience, and actively shape a more sustainable and inclusive tomorrow.
At Momentum, we believe that skills extend far beyond technical knowledge. Creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, digital confidence, intercultural understanding and active citizenship are all essential for navigating an increasingly complex world. Through our European projects, we work alongside partners across Europe to create learning experiences that empower young people to lead with confidence and purpose.
Remembering the Past to Build the Future
One of the most important skills we can nurture is the ability to understand history, think critically and engage with different perspectives.
The Memory Makers project empowers young people to explore historical narratives in innovative and engaging ways. By encouraging reflection, dialogue and storytelling, the project helps participants develop empathy, communication skills and a deeper understanding of Europe’s shared heritage. These are the kinds of lifelong skills that strengthen communities and help young people become informed, active citizens.
Peacebuilding Through Experience
Skills can also be developed through real-world action.
Our Paths2Peace project demonstrates how tourism can become a powerful tool for peacebuilding. The project is committed to equipping young people with the tools to promote peace through tourism, dialogue, and local action. It aims to empower the next generation of peacebuilders by combining practical training, mentorship, and community-based learning.
Music as a Tool for Leadership and Inclusion
Learning doesn’t always happen in a classroom.
The MyPEACE Music for Youth project uses music to engage young people in peacebuilding, giving them creative ways to express themselves, collaborate with others and explore issues that matter to them. The project has proved that language barriers don’t matter, and we’ve seen young people from all walks of life interacting with each other through music. A digital portal and suite of resources are available for free at www.mypeaceproject.eu empowering young people and their mentors with the skills to use music for peacebuilding.
Preparing Young People for an AI Future
As artificial intelligence transforms education, employment and society, digital skills have never been more important.
Our VALUES (Venturing into AI: Learning for an Unbounded, Ethical and Sustainable Europe) project helps young people develop the knowledge and confidence to use AI responsibly. From identifying misinformation and protecting privacy to understanding ethics and creating responsibly with AI, VALUES equips young people with practical digital skills while encouraging critical thinking and responsible decision-making.
Investing in Young People Means Investing in Our Future
World Youth Skills Day is an opportunity to celebrate not only the achievements of young people but also the organisations, educators and communities that invest in their growth.
Across every Momentum project, a common thread connects our work: empowering people with the confidence, knowledge and practical skills to make a meaningful contribution to society. Whether through history, music, tourism, peacebuilding or AI literacy, each project creates opportunities for young people to learn by doing, collaborate across borders and develop the skills they’ll carry into their futures.
