Food is an important aspect of culture and identity. It can be a powerful starting point for migrant women to share their cultural heritage and build connections with their local communities. Migrant women face significant challenges in accessing employment, entrepreneurship, and economic security. They are among the most disadvantaged groups in the EU. Despite their diversity as a group, gender, and origin crisscross as disadvantage factors in their lives. Cooking is one of the few things women take with them in exile. It is a transferable know-how which makes it possible to create links easily. Subsequently, migrant women have high unemployment rates, are among the lowest-paid workers in the EU and are consistently deskilled and pushed to casual jobs in unregulated sectors.
The 3 Kitchens project recognises that female migrants have diverse needs and aspirations by offering 3 different paths (volunteering, employment, and low-barrier entrepreneurship). We also deliver on multiple Sustainable Development Goals, provide diverse paths to empowerment for female migrants, and utilise three distinct kitchens to create a multifaceted integration and skill development approach.
