ISLE – Island Smart Learning & Energy

About the Project

ISLE (Island Smart Learning & Energy) is an Erasmus+ adult education project that empowers island communities to adopt circular bio-waste practices. By translating complex green technologies into accessible learning tools, digital simulations, and local community hubs, ISLE builds trust, awareness, and long-term behavioural readiness around renewable energy.

Project Description

Island communities across Europe face structurally compounded challenges regarding food and bio-waste due to geographic isolation, limited local treatment options, and costly off-island transport. While organic waste can be successfully converted into biogas and nutrient-rich digestate through small-scale anaerobic digestion, uptake in island regions remains extremely low. This gap stems from a lack of community readiness: residents and adult learners often lack awareness, hold misconceptions regarding safety or odour, and lack access to trusted, easy-to-understand educational resources. ISLE directly addresses this by equipping adult learners, educators, and local stakeholders with the knowledge and confidence needed to drive the green transition. The project curates transferable circular models, builds the green competences of educators, and establishes Island Learning Hubs where adults can explore hands-on sustainable routines.

Momentum plays a vital supporting role in this mission by leading communication, dissemination, and impact pathways. Led by Momentum Project Manager Paula Whyte, the team ensures that technical circular concepts are translated into engaging, human-centred learning materials that resonate with everyday households and communities.
